What Are Word Blends?

Blending means mixing two or more substances to form a single product. So it makes sense that, word blend means making a single word out of blending or mixing two words at least.

Word blends can be classified into two types: Total blends and Partial blends.

The total blend includes words that are made by reducing both the words being blended into smaller words and then merging them.
For example, breakfast + Lunch becomes Brunch (“Br” from breakfast and “Unch” from lunch )
some other examples under this classification include: Motor + Pedal combined to form Moped; Situation + Comedy gives Sitcom.

Unlike total blends, partial blends include the words formed by combining two words, between which only one word is reduced to a shorter form and blended completely with the other word.
For example, Dumb + Confound combines to form Dumbfound, Work + alcoholic which blends to form Workaholic.

There can be many more examples of word blends we use commonly or not so commonly in our daily conversations.
