Who were the ancient Greeks?

  • The name Greek was given to the people of Greece by the Roman people. The era of Greek civilisation is marked from 800 to 480 BC.
  • This era was mostly known for its focus on great philosophical knowledge along with the emergence of great writers, architecture, warriors, athletes, actors, politicians, etc.
  • This period is also known as the Archaic period.

Archaic Period:

  • The archaic period was bounded by two revolutions, the Structural revolution and the intellectual revolution. The Structural revolution helped establish politics in Greek and therefore holds a very important place in history.
  • The Intellectual revolution was the end of the structural revolution and occurred in the classical period.
  • The establishment of poleis was also the result of the structural revolution.
  • The Archaic period saw great development in the fields of Greek politics, economics, international relations, warfare and culture.
  • However, the Archaic period in history and archaeology is considered as the earliest period of culture and is the term most frequently used by art historians to denote the period of artistic development in Greece.
  • The Greek art period ended with the removal of Persians from Greece after the battle of Platea and Mykale in 479 BC.
