9 Futuristic Materials

Learn about some materials that seem like they should belong in science fiction, but actually exist today!

1. Aerogels are one of the lightest solid material in the world, where all the liquid has been replaced with gas. Primarily, scientists make a gel out of something like silicon or carbon compounds, then with high temperatures and pressures to blur the line between liquid and gas phases, creating supercritical fluid, then drifts out of the solid module and replaces with air.
2. In 2015, Scientists designed a thin material of 80 nm that could equally hide tiny objects. This invisibility cloak uses tiny brick shade gold antennas to counteract the natural light distortion, this tech exists only at a microscopic level now.
3. Superhydrophobic materials, it turns out that microscopically rough surfaces tend to be more hydrophobic because they can trap air and minimizing the interaction between water droplets and the surface of the material. Surfaces that are wrapped in small ridges or polymer cones that are 10’s of nm, which are waterproof materials that water droplets appear to bounce off them and even split.
4. Aggregated diamond nanorods or hyperdiamonds made up of tiny interlocked crystals under high heat and pressure to graphite which makes it more resistant.
5. Metallic glass or amorphous metal are formed when metal atoms are in a random arrangement, the malleability of molten glass merged with sturdy metal making it more resilient which doesn’t deform easily.
6. Metallic foam made up of metal like aluminum and has-filled pores or by injecting gas into liquid metal or by causing the precipitation of gas which are useful for high-tech shock and impact absorbers.
7. Aluminum oxynitride, a ceramic which means the material starts as a powder and heated until it melts and cooled into a crystalline structure like glass.Basically transparent and sturdy. Really useful for things like bulletproof windows.
8. Light transmitting concrete hopes to change by interspersing a thin layer of concrete with optical fiber which means light can travel. It maintains its strength so it can be used for heavy-duty projects.
9. Self-healing concrete invented in the Netherlands contains biodegradable capsules that are full of bacteria and calcium lactate which heals small cracks.
